Education:
My primary school was Pike Fold Primary School in north Manchester. I then went to Bury Grammar School (girls) in Bury. I followed this by going to Holy Cross College, also in Bury.
My journey through University wasn’t always a straight line from that point. I firstly went to Manchester University to study Social work but I only stayed from 1 semester due to mental health difficulties. I began working full time after this and did this for a few years. When I decided I wanted to go back to University I studied part time whilst working full time and did this at Leeds Metropolitan University and got a foundation degree in Young children’s learning and development. After a few more years of working I decided I would like to go into Psychology and so I started a psychology degree part time with the Open University – 2 years into this (which is one full academic year) I transferred into Salford University and I completed my BSc in Psychology at Salford University. I am now still at Salford University but now studying my PhD in Psychology.

We love films in our house, particularly Marvel films! My favourite super hero is Iron Man… and then Captain Marvel.

I work within a cognitive development lab exploring how children learn and participate in the world around us.
My current projects include;
- Examining in exercise can improve sleep and word learning in children with Autism spectrum disorders.
- How educational are “educational app’s” and do they really aid children’s learning
- How patterns in the natural environment (fractal patterns) help children restore their cognitive abilities and if this could be translated to screen based nature.

My Typical Day:
Everyday in my job is different, from using the computer to playing games. Sometimes I’m in the lab, sometimes in the office and the best days are when I get to go out to schools and nurseries and play with the children!

My day is never the same but always interesting and thats what I love about my job.
Some days I am recruiting and so can be sending lots of emails, spending a lot of time on social media and (pre-covid) visiting children’s groups and library sessions etc.Other days I can be testing children and this can involve lots of playing with children and trying to engage them in games that are actually psychological tests in disguise (so it doesn’t seem scary to them!)
Other days I could be presenting research at conferences or to groups, or writing up research papers. This is a great way of making sure that the information we learn as researchers is spread out to the public in general so it can help people.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the money to help fund school talks to discuss with students and teachers how good nature can be to help us in our brain! It can improve our memory and how we pay attention to things!
