I live in and have grown up in Manchester and I really love the diverse culture of this city! š One of my favourite things to do is go to gigs and I particularly loveĀ Band on the Wall –Ā its a small venue where the artists used to perform on a tiny stage on the back wall.Ā

I am interested in the ways that gender and other aspects of our identity influence young people’s experience of education. I really hope to make recommendations that will contribute to better policies and practices for those in education. I would like to encourage politicians to prioritise addressing discrimination in schools – particularly around school exclusions.
(No more school exclusions, please!)
I am also really passionate about making the school curriculum a lot more diverse & inclusive. For Black History Month I spent some time with some Year 11’s talking about Black British identity in Grime music. I really enjoyed it and all Y11s were keen for Grime to be included in the curriculum.

My Typical Day:
I wake up early and am lucky that I have time to enjoy a cup to tea! Then I check Twitter and pretend that it is always related to my PhD (but a lot of the time I’m checking in on what my favourite feminists or hip-hop artists have to say)! A lot of my day is spent at a computer, but I enjoy reading and writing so its okay!

In a typical day, I have to check my diary in the morning – otherwise I would forget everything I agreed to do that day! Also can’t forget the zoom meetings and emails I need to reply to …š“š¤Ā Being a PhD student can be really busy, but time management skills really help me manage the different jobs and roles that I take part in.
Most days I will read some journal articles (academic writing) but I also really like to look at information coming from outside of university academics. Hopefully, if I have a successful day, I will do some writing and try to put my thoughts about what I have read down on paper.
IF I have any spare time I like to make artwork like this (its a mix of a hip hop group called A Tribe Called Quest and Studio Ghibli’s movie Spirited Away):
And this one dedicated to all things Manchester:
And of course, as October was Black History Month:

What I'd do with the prize money:
